Clearspan marquee technology has provided many benefits - not least the solution to the problem of UK winter marquees
Staging a winter marquee event in the UK is fraught with many fears for customers. But are they valid?
Or are marquees in the winter just misunderstood?
For most event organisers the main issue with a winter marquee event is going to be heating.
With many a horrifying account published by unsuspecting hire customers on internet forums who have only just survived, but with a cautionary tale in tow, only to share their tuppence worth on do's and don'ts (often with more dont's than do's) concerning marquee events in UK winter.
Standing apart from the crowd for its versatility and multiple practical advantages is the Clearspan marquee. Its modular aluminium framed segments are easily integrated with interlocking compatibility making the eventual structure of great integrity, yet fully customisable to meet the wide-ranging needs of comfort for your event guests.
The following are advantages offered by Clearspan marquees for winter use:
- Modular (with built-in custom solutions)
- Sealed doors
- Firm sides
- Raised subfloor
- Built-in toilets
(1) Modular System
As Clearspan is a modular system, it comes pre-engineered and able to stand (with the help of simpler anchorage systems) without relying so much on the softness of the soil quality (which is not always the case in frosty UK winter time), as with a traditional peg and pole system, for example. Clearspan are the answer in the marquee industry to having a 'one I made earlier' approach to event tents.
(2) Sealed Doors
Clearspan marquees are designed with more secure door units, which are typically made from heavier tarp-like PVC material, with well sealed joins the whole way around preventing cold air rushing into the marquee and draining your much valued warm air quota.
(3) Robust Sides
Robust, sealed sides in a Clearspan tent leaves no room for draughts to enter through gaps between fabric joins, keeps the internal warm air pockets well protected to the enjoyment of your guests. There are few ambient conditions more distracting and disheartening as a guest attending an outdoor event, than to be in the line of fire, so to speak, or rather line of chill of an unrelenting ice-cold blast.
(4) Internal Lining
Clearspan tents accommodate the attachment of various types of internal lining drapes. Of course, lining is a well used interior decor feature, for weddings particularly adopted for the aesthetic benefits and theme setting ability. But in the winter time, marquee lining affords further upholstered insulation for reducing heat depletion within the tent, keeping guests consistently comfortable and at a lower expense of heating (fuel) costs in maintaining a desirable temperature.
(5) Steel Frame Sub Flooring Systems
Sub flooring systems, like the type Tectonics UK allow for avoidance of messy seepage from wet turf entering into the interior of the marquee through permeable flooring materials like, matting, during wet winter events. The sub flooring is built on steel joists which provide an elevate gap between the natural ground and the installed floor boards, negating the risk of rising damp through the floor, keeping guests completely dry.
(6) Built In Toilets
Seepage of heat from the marquee tents will occur most drastically at entrances and exits. So it stands to reason that wherever you can reduce the incidence of opening the doors to the marquee, you will also decrease loss of heat. Toilet breaks during marquee events can happen frequently enough and if guests are directed to visit toilets in neighbouring buildings rather than specialist in-built facilities within the marquee, then this is where much internal heat will be lost during your winter events.
Clearspan marquees however being modular are easily customised to accommodate temporary toilets within the structure, removing the need to open doors for toilet breaks thus preserving heat.
Heating a marquee on so many occasions as popularly documented on review based websites has resulted in inadequate provisions being made and therefore the guest enjoyment factor takes a drubbing. A little bit of practical understanding is required though for choosing the correct winter marquee heating solution.
Space heaters are essentially what will be needed to heat a marquee internal spaces. But again, such like the word 'marquee', 'space heater' doesn't really mean anything substantial without further sub-definition.
Space heating can be performed primarily by one of three methods: radiant, conductive or convection.
Radiant heaters: usually work by heating a liquid like diathermal oil, which when heated 'radiates' heated air (in waves, rather than in gusts) and as such cannot deal effectively with passing its heat beyond obstacles, which tend to physically block or stifle those beneficial heat waves. Great for spot heating in confined spaces, but not for marquees.
Conductive heaters: use electrically heated elements by which heated it transferred heating the air immediately surrounding the appliance, passing heat benefit to those people closest to the heater.
Convection heaters: often fuelled by propane gas or similar hydrocarbon based fossil fuel, perhaps even petrol at times. This type of heater, when fan assisted, draws in cooler air into the heating chamber and from ignition of fuel liberating heat upon the drawn in air flow, the fuel powered fan forces a flow now warm air out into the surrounding environment. Altogether a very effective, yet costly method of heating a marquee event space.
Ideal: Consistent airflow of hot air throughout the marquee is required for winter marquee bookings, to ensure there are no uncomfortable cold spots or columns of cold air whereby guests might become displeased.
Heating a marquee space can be expensive, because for consistent results, continual fuel supply will be needed.
With longer nights and shorter days, the UK winter presents a greater need than any season for artificial lighting with marquee events.
Because of the structure of a Clearspan marquee being made of aluminium joists, this affords a ready-made sturdy shell for securely installing many types of lighting solutions including, chandeliers and rigged spot lighting, for example. Again, Clearspan lends itself to being by far the best candidate for the job.
Do all marquee hire contractors provide Clearspan structures for winter events?
Marquees come in all shapes and sizes to suit various purposes, and so for any one company to provide 'all things marquees' is simply not feasible.
This means it is incumbent upon the hire customer to perform the due diligence of researching the most appropriate types of structure for their proposed event, like a Clearspan marquee, and then to source relevant hire vendors within their region who are capable of serving their need.
Event hire brokers like Selmore offer a value adding, intermediary concierge service to all those seeking to hire event marquees.
The advantage with Selmore and other event brokers is the clarity of unbiased consultation and the breadth of advice, helping a prospective hire customer with establishing their most beneficial hire options, before making an obligatory commitment.
This service is Free of Charge ('FoC') to the event hire customer.
